The Story of the Bald Guy Brew Coffee Company

November 5, 2007

Have you ever felt you were on the verge of something big, but you couldn’t quite put your finger on it? That’s the way we have felt over the last year as we began the java journey.

First a dream…a dream of creating a business that would be socially responsible and eco-friendly. What does that look like? It looks like a guy and girl with two little boys in tow trying to create a business that isn’t all about the money! After working in coffee growing countries doing relief work, we had the bright idea that we can create a business that “empowers coffee growing communities” rather than “exploiting coffee growing communities”!

Then an idea…an idea which my wife shared with me upon her return from a recent visit to Seattle to visit a girlfriend. Eventually the idea took the form of a fully functional mobile coffee-espresso-coffee roasting-buggy that runs on bio-diesel with the power for all of the equipment supplied by solar-power! This idea has now morphed into the Bald Guy Brew International Head-Quarters in Boone, North Carolina.

Throw into the mix some timely conversations and divine guidance, and boom: the bald guy brew! Now that you know the “short” version of the story, here are the official Bald Guy Brew values which guide our decisions and planning.

Eco-Friendly

The BGB is committed to using organic, shade grown beans. By purchasing eco-friendly beans, we support farmers using sustainable practices which maintain an equitable partnership between birds, farmers, consumers, and the environment.

Socially Responsible
By offering certified fair trade coffees, we are making an ethical choice because every pound we sell will make a difference in coffee growing communities. We also donate 10% of every sale to the International Justice Mission to help fight the battle against children who are either forced into slavery or prostitution.

Artisanal Coffee

Call it what you will, but there is an art to roasting coffee. By cupping all of our coffees, we are able to determine the right time & temp. profile for roasting our coffee…ensuring that our customers get what they pay for: the best stinking cup of fresh roasted coffee they ever tasted!

Excuse me for asking, but, um, if the coffee stinks, do you really think it will be the best they’ve tasted? Just sayin’…

well, you’ve got a point…however, “stinking” has morphed from smelling bad, putrid, rotten, etc. to mean really, really, really good.

google “stinking good” and you will find plenty of examples of food, bands, pictures, and experiences as being “stinking good”.

I found your website through the San Franciscan website and would like to ask how you like their service. We are a new coffee company starting in Vancouver, BC and we are just starting the research for our coffee company and shopping around for prices. Any comment you have about this company would be appreciated.

On another note, just in general how do you feel about the coffee business? I know you are busy but any general comments or feelings about the subject would be appreciated. Do you find it to be profitable? (obviously you do or you would not be in business still) but is it hard to make a profit? How do you find it trying to sell your product? Do you go around to each individual retailer or do your sales mostly come from the internet? Do you find your website sells a lot of coffee? Once again, thank you for your time and imput.

    Sincerely, Lisa

Hey Bald Guy, thanks for the coffee!

Two friends and I were en route to southwest VA from Boone and we saw your sign at the last minute, make a quick 180 and stopped at your place. We didn’t realize that you were closed so early in the afternoon so we came in anyway and you were nice enough to give us some leftover coffee - which was incredibly kind of you to do for 3 hungover lads like ourselves.

There were no more obvious (good) coffee spots until home (we have our own awesome fair trade/organic micro roaster thankfully) so we were infinitely grateful.

Not only is he bald, but he is also a cool guy too. Thanks again!

    Dear Bald Guy Brew,

Just wanted to say that I really appreciate all that you are brewing!

I also want to say Thank You for helping support this year’s High Country ICE BOWL and Polar Plunge, an extreme charity disc golf tournament (at Ashe Co. Park) benefitting the Ashe Co. Humane Society! This year we raised a whopping $10,556 and were 3rd in the World (out of 268 events) in fundraising!!

    Cheers to Bald Guy Brew!

Got something to say?
