Our Colombian Coffee

Our Organic Colombian Coffee comes from The Cooperativa del Sur del Cauca - COSURCA, which was established on March 12, 1993 in the coffee growing region of Cauca.  A secondary level cooperative currently serving as an umbrella organization for eleven producer associations located in the Southern Macizo mountains. The cooperative is comprised of 1,423 families of coffee producers, including peasant, indigenous, and Afro communities.

The cooperative was created to provide support for socio, economic, and political initiatives within the region to create stability and equality for coffee producers.  Along with agricultural guidance to improve crop production while implementing sustainable farming practices, the Cosurca cooperative is improving the quality of life for their producers and their environs.

The Cosurca cooperative has been pro-active in helping their producers manage soil degradation, and inconsistent crop cycles due to climate change. So far the cooperative has planted 27,000 shade trees of native species.

The Origins of Colombian Coffee

In the Begining...

The history of Colombian coffee goes back to the late 1700s, when the first coffee plants were brought to the country by the Spanish Jesuits. Over the course of the 19th century, coffee production and exports steadily increased, leading Colombia to become the world’s largest producer of coffee by the end of the century.

In 1927, the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia (FNC) was established to protect the interests of coffee growers and ensure the quality of Colombian coffee. The FNC developed a number of programs to support coffee farmers and promote the production of high quality coffee.

Meet Juan Valdez

In the 1940s, the FNC embarked on an ambitious campaign to promote Colombian coffee to the world. The “Juan Valdez” campaign, which featured an iconic figure representing a Colombian coffee farmer, was launched in 1959 and has been used to promote Colombian coffee for more than 50 years.

The Colombian coffee industry quickly grew to be one of the largest in the world, and by the early 1900s, it was the largest producer of coffee in the world. Colombia’s high-altitude climate and unique soil conditions were ideal for producing the rich, flavorful coffee beans that have become so popular.

Overcoming Adversity

In the late 20th century, the Colombian coffee industry faced a number of challenges, including a decrease in production due to the spread of coffee leaf rust, a devastating fungus that can destroy entire crops.

Today, Colombia is the world’s third-largest coffee producer, behind Brazil and Vietnam. It produces around 15 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee annually, with the majority of production focused on the Arabica variety. Colombian coffee is renowned for its mild, acidic flavor and is widely exported around the world.
